Keep Turning that Wheel of Life: There is no reason to stop exercising when you get older. In fact, regular exercise at this life stage can dramatically improve your quality of life and slow the onset of age-related diseases. Aerobic exercise helps prevent the major lifestyle disorders and resistance exercise reduces the effects of muscle wasting and helps prevent osteoporosis, which is particularly important for older women. Even if you've never exercised before, or you have medical problems, you can still benefit from exercise. Talk to your doctor about an appropriate exercise routine that can gradually get you moving towards better health. A stronger heart and lungs along with healthier muscles, bones and joints, together with weight control, better balance, a positive self image and a stronger immune system - these are just some of the benefits for seniors who exercise regularly. Fewer than 15 percent of people over the age of 65 get enough physical activity. By age 75, one-third of the men and half the women in the United States become permanent couch potatoes who do no physical activity. That puts them at risk for all sorts of health problems and injuries, including falls. Despite the obvious benefits, many seniors find it difficult to start and stick with an exercise program. Here are some suggestions to get you going: 1) Don't do 30 minutes of exercise all at once, if you don't want to. You can do it in 10-minute sessions, three times a day. 2) Choose activities that you enjoy. Don't sign up for an aerobics class if you dislike aerobics. 3) If you've never exercised, start with something easy, like walking. There's a low risk of injury and it doesn't cause a lot of muscle soreness, which may discourage you from doing it again. 4) Exercise with a friend or in a class to help keep you motivated. If you exercise alone, listen to a recorded book or music to reduce boredom. Cross-training also reduces boredom and works different muscle groups. 5) Set goals and track your activity, so you can evaluate your progress and see what you've accomplished. 6) Work exercise into your daily routine. Use the stairs instead of the elevator, park at the far end of the parking lot so you have a longer walk or take your dog for a stroll. To make sure your golden years really sparkle, start an exercise program and stick with it. (Health 24)

Determining Your Calorie Needs: Knowing exactly how many calories your body needs can make or break your fitness goals. Guessing may be enough for some people, but most of us need concrete numbers to follow. Your total caloric requirement includes your resting energy needs (basal metabolism) and the calories you burn during various activities. Your basal caloric needs fuel things like breathing, heartbeat, food digestion, etc. and count for 60-70% of your total daily calorie needs. These needs vary depending on your gender, height, weight, age and the amount of lean body mass (muscle) you have.

Once you know how many calories you use for day to day living, you can modify the number of calories in your diet to meet your specific goals. Add the calories burned from the activities you do to your basal metabolic needs and you have your total daily caloric expenditure. If your goal is to maintain your current weight, you eat enough calories to fuel your daily needs. If you want to lose weight, you should create a 500 to 1,000 calorie deficit everyday for safe and healthy weight loss (for 1 to 2 pounds per week.) This calorie deficit should be a combination of increased exercise and reduced calorie intake. If your goal is to gain weight, you should add calories every day from quality foods that will give your body the additional calories and nutrients it needs to add healthy weight. Keeping track of your eating habits and calorie intake is more effective than just "watching what you eat." Most people are surprised at how unhealthy their "healthy" diets really are. Try keeping track of your exercise and diet; then make changes so your eating plan can help you reach your health and fitness goals. It's a small price to pay for health and fitness, and you're worth the effort! (24 Hour Fitness)

“The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in the life to celebrate. The more you complain, the more misery and fault you will have to find.”

Laugh it Out Loud: No, No, No: Have you become a circus juggler? It’s easy to have your life become a blur when you’re juggling work, parties, vacations and gift buying. This month the easiest way to keep yourself in balance is to learn that two lettered word. N-O! You can even hold your belly and laugh it out loud, No...No...NO! The truth is you will get involved and invited to do more than you can possible handle. A "No" here and there will not only give you more time, it will empower you to choose the things you truly want to do. (Brought to you by Jason

Habit Forming: Did you know that you can create successful habits? First, identify the areas in your life that need change and write down the desired habits that need to be formed. Start small and pick one of the desired habits you have identified, creating a daily or weekly routine that is easy to follow and moves you toward success. Once you have created your new habit and it is in your full routine, move on to the next new habit and repeat. Sometimes the only difference between being successful and not; is having successful habits. Some examples of successful habits could be getting up earlier, doing thing when they need to be done, being prepared, or effective time management.

What’s Important to You: If someone asked you to name the most important things in your life, what would you list – family, faith, health, friends, integrity, career? It is a question that very rarely gets asked of us by other people. Yet, every day life asks that question. And every day we answer. The answer is not in words, but in action. The actions you take on a daily basis speak louder than any claims you might make as to the most important things in your life. The way you spend your time, the things to which you give your attention, and the areas to which you commit your resources, present a clear and undeniable picture of your true priorities. Are your priorities what you think they are? Look at your actions. Look at your results. Look at the life you've built for yourself. Does your reality agree with your vision? Success and fulfillment come not from what we think would be nice, but from what we actually do, hour after hour, day after day. Your life at this moment is an accurate representation of the things that have truly been important to you in the past, of whatever you have been committed to achieving. With that in mind, ask yourself – what's important to you now? (Daily Motivator)

A Very Old Fashioned Holiday: Think back to a time when you checked your home answering machine for messages after returning from an ice skating outing, made plans to go holiday shopping and carried them through without interruption, or checked your email just once a day in the midst of cooking and decorating for the holidays. The expectation in popular culture is that we must be readily available to our family, friends, and coworkers at all times. A recent study conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that the widespread consumption of goods and services that provide information defines American culture as we know it. By 2003 over 60% of Americans carried a cell phone. The need to remain connected prompts many of us to carry two cell phones: one for work and one for our personal use. Maybe you are receiving email through your phone while away from work and home. We have all become master multitaskers. So much so that we incorporate this skill into our personal lives; balancing a cell phone on one ear and taking notes on our PDA while pawing through wrapping paper or baking cookies. Consider unplugging yourself for the holidays. Turn off your work cell phone outside of work hours and trust that co-workers will understand your desire to enjoy time with family and friends. Check work emails at work. Reprioritize and make your leisure and your family the focus during your downtime. Move relaxation and companionship to the top of your holiday wish list this year! You may find the feeling so refreshing that unplugging becomes your New Year’s resolution. (Brought to you by Xenium)
