Exercise to Relieve Stress: People who exercise regularly will tell you they feel better. Some will say it's because the chemicals produced in the brain, called neurotransmitters, are stimulated during exercise. Since it's believed that neurotransmitters mediate our moods and emotions, they can make us feel better and less stressed. There is plenty to support that exercise provides stress-relieving benefits. Exercise can help you feel less anxious. Exercise can relax you. Exercise can make you feel better about yourself. Think about those times when you've been physically active. Haven't you felt better about yourself? That feeling of self-worth contributes to stress relief. Exercise can make you eat better. People who exercise regularly tend to eat more nutritious food. And it's no secret that good nutrition helps your body manage stress better. Now that you know exercise can make a big difference in controlling stress, make some time for regular physical activity. The following three activities can help you get started: Aerobic activity: All it takes is about 20 minutes worth, five days a week. Twenty minutes won't carve a big chunk out of your day, but it will improve your ability to control stress significantly. Yoga: In yoga or yoga-type activities, your mind relaxes progressively as your body increases its amount of muscular work. Recent studies have shown that when large muscle groups repeatedly contract and relax, the brain receives a signal to release specific neurotransmitters, which in turn make you feel relaxed and more alert. Recreational sports: Play tennis, racquetball, volleyball or squash. These games require the kind of vigorous activity that rids your body of stress-causing adrenaline and other hormones. But not just any exercise will do. Outdoors or away from the office is the best place to find a stress-free environment. Even a corporate fitness center can have too many work-related thoughts for some people. Stay away from overcrowded classes. If you work surrounded by people, a big exercise class may be counterproductive. Solo exercise may be more relaxing for you. If, however, you work alone, you may enjoy the social benefit of exercising in a group. A lot depends on your personality and what causes stress for you. Don't skip a chance to exercise. Day-break exercises can be as simple as walking or climbing stairs, stretching or doing calisthenics. Controlling stress comes down to making the time to exercise. You're worth it! (American Council on Exercise)

Control Hunger and Improve Energy: Are you looking for some tips for controlling hunger and improving energy? Try eating foods that require a lot of energy from the body to process and digest. Celery is one example that fits the bill, but don't worry, you don’t need to live on it. Ultimately, you need to eat foods that are not only healthy and effective for fat loss, but those that you enjoy. Otherwise it won't be a realistic, permanent change. You can use "high energy foods" (many fruits and veggies), combined with protein-rich foods that are higher in a thermogenic response (meaning they generate more heat and therefore burn more calories) to fill you up. With that combination, it's next to impossible to go wrong. Try eating a 1/2 of an apple 15 minutes prior to your first meal. Then simply eat a healthy breakfast (a natural starchy carb, such as oatmeal, with a protein source, such as a small protein shake). You'll find that you'll eat less (be sure to stop when pleasantly full and satisfied as you don't have to eat the entire meal), and your cravings for sugar are diminished. You'll also find that the pectin in the apple peel will help your blood sugar stabilize; hence you'll be less hungry throughout the day and have more energy. Next, try eating a raw carrot (or several baby carrots) immediately prior to lunch. Then, eat a healthy lunch (which should include a small portion of a natural starchy carb, such as black beans or brown rice, some veggies, such as a salad, and a lean protein, such as chicken or fish). Contrary to popular belief, the carrot should not be feared. Yes, it's a "high GI food," but it's also a very "low-energy, high-density" food (it's filling, but low in calories), and that's all you need to worry about. As a side-note, veggies in general are perfect for fat loss because they are very low in calories, yet high in fiber so they are quite filling, are loaded with vitamins and minerals and other very beneficial nutrients, and have very little adverse affects on blood sugar levels like so many other carbs do. Lastly, try eating 1-2 raw celery sticks prior to dinner. Then, eat a healthy dinner, which should consist of a lean protein source, such as lean meat, with lots of veggies. So, a chicken salad, shrimp fajitas, or lean steak kabobs all work well. Following these three very easy steps can cause radical changes in your body's ability to cleanse itself, burn more fat, stay energized, and prevent you from overeating at each meal. This strategy can also be used before eating snacks too. (Global Health & Fitness)

Interesting Facts about Water: Did you know that some forms of fatigue are often symptoms of dehydration and can often be cured by drinking a glass or two of water? Water is the main food the body needs and our bodies consist of 55 – 75% water. It is healthy to drink water with meals as it aids the process of digestion. The best way to get rid of water retention is to drink a lot of water. Water allows the body to metabolize fats more efficiently. Good water intake prevents the skin from sagging. The thirst reflex only appears when our bodies are already dehydrated. Children dehydrate more quickly than adults do and a survey revealed that 65% of school children drank too little water. A 2% reduction of water levels in the body can lead to a 20% decrease in mental and physical performance. Only 1.1% of the water on earth is suitable for drinking.

Shine a Light: Even if the amount of goodness that you can see is tiny, focus on that goodness. Focus on it, and it will grow. When the positive possibilities seem terribly overwhelmed by the negative influences, give your attention to those positive possibilities and you will give them real power. The faintest light will push back the darkness and you'll then have the opportunity to make that light shine even more brightly. When everything has gone wrong, the smallest positive step can make a world of difference. Once a positive momentum is established, you can continue to build upon it. Even though it may seem that all hope is lost, one person with a positive purpose has the power to begin turning things around. Once that happens, others will gratefully join in. Whatever the situation may be, choose to shine a positive light that those around you can see. And the more it is seen, the brighter it will become. (Daily Motivator)

The Fall Hike: Fall has arrived and the leaves are beginning to change. Enjoy the season and head to the woods for a hike. Studies show that 30 minutes of exercise a day, particularly walking at a moderate pace, can lengthen your life as much as 1.3 years. Make sure you stretch before and after a moderate hike to lessen any soreness you might have as a result of your efforts. Wear proper footwear for the terrain you plan to hike; hiking boots for ankle support on off-trail rocky slopes or lighter footwear for paved trails. Carry water and snacks for longer hikes and layer your clothing to adjust for the frequent changes in your exertion level and fall temperatures. Remember to keep your head up and your shoulders back and relaxed to maintain proper posture throughout your hike. Most of all, take time to enjoy the scenery around you as you walk. Bring along a pair of binoculars and a camera to study wildlife up close and capture your experience. (Brought to you by Xenium)
